Los Luceros Historic Site (LLHS) offers extended hours from sunrise to sunset on the first Sunday of each month. Take a guided bird walk from 7-9:30 a.m. led by volunteers from the Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC). The early morning is ideal for bird watching at Los Luceros, which boasts a large diversity of species year-round including Lewis’ Woodpeckers, Downy Woodpeckers, Red-headed Woodpeckers, Northern Flickers, black-chinned hummingbirds, Wilson’s warblers, and yellow-billed cuckoos.

Today we’ll also have special guest musical performer Dr. Gregorio Gonzalez (Comanche & Genízaro) offering an interactive storytelling and musical performance at 11 a.m. called, al la’o del río, about Native New Mexico’s borderlands.

Gonzalez will then lead a zine-making workshop at 2 p.m. as part of the program. Art supplies will be provided, but people are also encouraged to bring art-making materials (i.e. colored pencils, markers, crayons, paper, etc.) and will learn how to make zines telling stories about local and regional histories. A zine is a self-published, DIY booklet that can be filled with art, writing, poetry, collage, and other personal forms of free expression. Gonzales will share music and stories while people work on their zines.

Dawn ‘Til Dusk days also offers artists a great opportunity to enjoy golden hour and extended times for painting, sketching, and landscape photography. Picnics are common and encouraged as visitors can bring a blanket to eat under the Cottonwood trees. Visitors are invited to enjoy one of the site’s many benches in scenic locations throughout the site, including along the river, and children are encouraged to bring their bicycles to explore the site in a fun new way. Educational children’s activities and crafts are available during and change each month.

Entrance into LLHS, as well as activities, is FREE for New Mexico residents with ID, and includes access to the site’s visitor center, historic buildings, trails, and picnic areas. Regular admission for non-residents is $7/adult and free to children 16 and younger.
