Great Blue Heron
Ardea herodias
Photographed here is one of our frequent Los Luceros guests, the great blue heron. The great blue heron is the largest heron in North America. They eat a variety of animals including insects, fish, small mammals, amphibians, and reptiles. They strike their prey using their s-shaped neck, which is made up of specially shaped vertebrae, and their sharp beak. Though they are large birds of up to 4.5 feet in length, their hollow bones (a feature all birds share) means they only weight about five to six pounds. Come see if you can spot this bird yourself!
