Lincoln Historic Site

Join us for Lincoln Lecture Series, held on the first Saturday of every month through October. These lectures delve into fascinating topics from guest lecturers throughout the state and take place in the iconic San Juan Bautista Church. Learn about New Mexico’s rich history at these engaging events.

This month’s program is by lecturer Mary Lavin from Smokey Bear Historic Park who will present “Becoming a Wildfire-Adapted Community.” Fire has historically been a part of southwest forest ecosystems. Many species, like ponderosa pine, are adapted to frequent, low-moderate intensity wildfires. But overstocked forests coupled with a hundred years of fire exclusion have changed the landscape and its relationship with fire. Prolonged periods of drought and warmer, drier climates have made forests more susceptible to drought stress and insect and disease infestation. These factors combined with a buildup of hazardous fuels and overstocked forests have created an increased risk of catastrophic wildfires. Learn from Lavin how communities can protect against risk and become Wildfire-Adapted.

Lincoln Lecture Series is included with admission of $7/adults and free to children 16 years and younger, NM disabled veterans, NM foster families, and members of MNMF and Friends of Lincoln.
