Lincoln Lecture: The Evolution of the Colt Frontier Six Shooter and the Winchester 73
At Lincoln Historic Site
8/2/25, Saturday
2:00pm - 3:00pm
Join us for a special Lincoln Lecture Series during Old Lincoln Days. Two speakers will share about fascinating topics in the iconic San Juan Bautista Church. At 2 p.m., Prince G. McKenzie will present, “The Evolution of the Colt Frontier Six Shooter and the Winchester 73.” He’ll discuss why these weapons became the basic tools of farmers, ranchers, cowboys, lawmen, outlaws, miners, railroaders and traveling settlers and how some historians characterized them as "the guns that won the West." McKenzie will offer historical background and context to the evolution of gun use, especially in the American West with a focus on the Frontier Six Shooter and the Winchester 73.
Prince G. McKenzie is a descendant of a pioneer family that came west building the Texas & Pacific Railroad across Texas in 1881. He received a BA in History from the University of Texas - El Paso in 1968, and ROTC Commission in the Military Intelligence Corps. He served two tours as an Intelligence analyst and Operations Officer in Vietnam; was promoted to Captain; and served as an Operations Officer with the First Armored Division. He returned to the University of Texas - El Paso for Graduate Studies in Art History and European Art Study. He is a retired curator of the El Paso City Deptartment of Museums. Since 2001 he has been director of the Railroad & Transportation Museum of El Paso del Norte. He currently serves on the El Paso County Historical Commission.
