At Lincoln Historic Site
7/5/25, Saturday
1:00pm - 2:00pm

Lincoln Historic Site

Join us for Lincoln Lecture Series, held on the first Saturday of every month through October. These lectures delve into fascinating topics from guest lecturers throughout the state and take place in the iconic San Juan Bautista Church. Learn about New Mexico’s rich history at these engaging events.

This month’s program is by lecturer Rebekha Crockett, Instructional Coordinator Supervisor at Bosque Redondo Memorial at Fort Sumner Historic Site, who will present the topic, "Two Forts, Two Tribes: The History of Bosque Redondo and Connections to Fort Stanton." In the 1860s a campaign of forced removal was launched against both the Mescalero Apache (Ndé) and Navajo (Diné) by Union forces under the command of General James H. Carleton and Colonel Christopher “Kit” Carson. Fort Stanton was used as a base of operations against the Ndé, and Fort Sumner was established as the control center of the Bosque Redondo Indian Reservation, an internment camp for both tribes. This presentation encompasses the history of the Bosque Redondo Indian Reservation, the establishment of Fort Sumner, and the important role Fort Stanton played leading up to, during, and in the aftermath of this dark chapter in our history.  Crockett served as an Interpretive Ranger for Bosque Redondo Memorial from 2019 to 2021 and is currently the Instructional Coordinator Supervisor at the site.

The Lincoln Lecture Series is included with admission of $7/adults and free to children 16 years and younger, NM foster families, NM disabled veterans, Fort Stanton, Inc. members, and MNMF members.
